What’s in a Logo?
A logo isn’t just art—it’s your brand’s face, needing simplicity, scalability, and a timeless edge. I learned that the hard way with SQUAREdog Consulting.
In late 2019, I launched my IT consultancy, hustling with no income and bills piling up. I’d nailed the name “Square Dog”, registered it, and snagged a domain. But when billing time hit, I needed a logo—fast. With two days and zero drawing skills, I sketched some disasters, then scavenged online for “something for now.” I texted it to my daughter, “my branding guru”.
“Hi angel, what do you think?”
“Vomit emoji, thumbs down, Noooo! It’s old and horrible.”
“What’s wrong with it?”
“I’ll send ideas.”
Hours later, she sent ten hand-drawn gems. I loved two but, pressed for time, grabbed a free app and slapped a “temporary” logo on my invoice. It stuck for two years—I even grew fond of it.
Then, in 2021, my new partner Lelani joined. She didn’t “feel” the logo. We brainstormed for weeks, landing on a simple “S” and “D” with a blue gradient. I called my daughter:
“New logo—what do you think?”
“Hmm, I like it! Why blue?”
“I just like it.”
“Colours matter—trust, vibe…”
“Fine, I’ll check.”
My research confirmed blue screams trust and professionalism. Perfect! Starting a business is like a relationship—nerve-wracking, exciting, and worth the effort. My logo? It took brutal honesty and a few tries, but it fits.
